2004 NCHA Futurity Sales: World Beaters
Cutting horse sale prices went out of the roof during the National Cutting Horse Association Futurity at Will Rogers Equestrian Center, when 1,086 horses sold for an average of $18,030. The Futurity Sales, held on nine consecutive days, December 4 through December 12, were produced for NCHA by Western Bloodstock, Weatherford, TX.
In addition to the increased average over 2003 for all sales, the Preferred Breeders Sale session, on December 8, set a world record for a yearling and broodmare combined sale with an average of $51,410 on 99 horses. The Select Two-Year-Old Sale also broke ground with the sale of 36 horses in training for an average of $43,915.
“Western Bloodstock does a terrific job,” said NCHA executive director Jeff Hooper. “These sales draw buyers and sellers from around the world and are an integral part of the Futurity.”
In the three years since Western Bloodstock took the reins of the Select Two-Year-Old Sale, the average price for horses sold has more than doubled every year. This year’s high-selling two-year-old, at $180,000, was Heres My Bet, a colt sired by Bet On Me 498, consigned by Ron Knutson and Doug Black, Spokane, WA, and purchased by David Plummer, Fruit Heights, UT. Heres My Bet is a three-quarter brother to Some Kinda Memories, a former NCHA Futurity champion.
The sale toppers, from all sales, were two mares, that each brought $450,000. Ruby Tuesday DNA, sired by Peppy San Badger and out of the number two leading producer, Playboys Ruby, was consigned by Round Mountain Ranch, Longmont, CO, and purchased by Tree-Tree Top Ranch, Boise, ID.
Young Guns Babe, 2003 NCHA Reserve World Champion and earner of $115,934, also sold for $450,000, to David and Stacie McDavid, Weatherford, TX. The McDavids own the young stallion Hes A Peptospoonsful, the sire of two of the three embryos that sold with Young Guns Babe, who is a daughter of Young Gun, owned by co-consignor Terry Riddle, Wynnewood, OK.
Walton’s Rocking W Ranch, Mineral Wells, TX, was consignor of the high-selling yearling, High Stylin Cat, by High Brow Cat. The black colt’s dam is Stylish Rosie, an NCHA champion shown by Walton’s resident trainer, Eddie Flynn. The colt sold for $185,000 to Peter and Nora Stent, Woodside, CA, who own Stylish Rosie’s sire, Docs Stylish Oak, cutting’s leading sire in terms of average offspring earnings. Walton’s Rocking W Ranch reserved five lifetime annual breedings to High Stylin Cat.
Starched Wranglers, raised and shown by consignor Bucki James, Purcell, OK, brought a winning bid of $107,000, as the high-selling show gelding. The six-year-old son of Lil Tenino Fair and earner of $137,731, was purchased by Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, who was a semi-finalist in the amateur division of this year’s NCHA Futurity.
The Western Bloodstock agenda included complimentary meals preceding four sale sessions, as well as one full day Super Stallion Saturday on December 11 -- dedicated to the display of the cutting industry’s top stallions.
