Nitro Dual Doc Tops Hillis Akin Sale

Nitro Dual Doc, a six-year-old stallion by Peptoboonsmal out of the dam of leading cutting sire Dual Pep, brought the top price of $335,000 at the Hillis Akin Ranch Complete Dispersal, held September 11, in Gainesville, Texas. The sale, managed by Western Bloodstock, attracted buyers from 22 states, Belgium, Italy and Canada. In all, 140 horses were sold for an average price of $14,685.

“The names of the Hillis Akin Ranch stallions are household words in the performance horse world,” said Western Bloodstock’s Jim Ware. “This has been a very successful breeding program and the sale results reflected the popularity of these bloodlines.”

Nitro Dual Doc, the NCHA earner of $61,671 and one of Hillis Akin Ranch’s reference sires, was purchased by Marshall Chesrown, of Black Rock Ranch, Harrison, Idaho. Reference sire Mr Gallo Del Cielo sold for $172,000 to Steve Norris of T-Cross Ranch, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The six-year-old stallion, sired by Gallo Del Cielo, is an AQHA ROM performer and World qualifier in heeling, heading and calf roping.

The top-selling mare, at $120,000, was Peppy Ray Jean, a 16-year-old daughter of Peppy San Badger, bred to Im Chairman and purchased by Craig Sweat of Big Sky, Montana. Sweat also paid $95,000 for Hopefletchly, a 16-year-old daughter of Jae Bar Fletch that sold with an embryo by Im Chairman. Hopefletchly, the NCHA earner of $111,787, is the dam of Hopefletchs Fantasy ($19,576) and CD Fletch ($18,460).

HA Nitros Roan Rebel, a red roan colt by Nitro Dual Doc out of Hopefletchly, was the top-selling yearling at $50,000. Bill Gunlock, of Dayton, Ohio, was the buyer.

Reference sire Im Chairman, by Grays Starlight and a half-brother to Nitro Dual Doc, was one of only two horses offered with a reserve. He brought final bid of $300,000, but the reserve was not attained and he will continue his show career for Akin under trainer Ascencion Banuelos.

Hillis Akin, a fur designer and retailer, began his horse program in 1992. “It has always been my philosophy that it is mandatory to have great broodmares in a breeding program,” explained Akin, who has bred the earners of more than a million dollars.
