Near record for NCHA Super Stakes Sale
April 17, 2004 - The National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes Sale, held at Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, TX on April 17, saw a 15 percent increase in sale averages over those in 2003. The well attended auction recorded the second highest average in the sale’s history.
“There were more people than in 2003 and the bidding was more active,” noted Milt Bradford of Western Bloodstock, the company which produces all of NCHA’s sales in Fort Worth. “The interest in some categories of horses might have even been stronger than at the 2003 NCHA Futurity Sales.”
Net average on 108 horses sold was $13,595 with the top five selling for an average of $73,800; the top 10 sold for an average of $53,500; and the top 20 sold for an average of $37,400.
The highest selling lot, 11-year-old Playgiarism, brought a winning bid of $150,000 from Niangua River Ranch of Eldridge, MO, co-owner with Mike Mowery of cutting sire Freckles Fancy Twist. Consigned by Meredith McCullar of Baird, TX, Playgiarism, an earner of $44,307 sired by Freckles Playboy, sold with a 2004 embryo by High Brow Cat and a paid breeding to Dual Kit for 2004.
At almost the exact moment Playgiarism was being sold, her four-year-old daughter Duals Play Kit, by Dual Kit, won the Super Stakes Limited Non-Pro championship with Clay McCullar. Duals Play Kit also placed in the Super Stakes Open finals under Shannon Hall and was both the Memphis Futurity and Suncoast Amateur champion.
RW Milagro, a four-year-old daughter of Dual Pep, sold for $79,000. An NCHA money earner and NCHA Futurity Semi-Finalist, RW Milagro was consigned by Rock Creek Ranch of Weatherford, TX and purchased by Furst Ranch of Argyle, TX.
Niangua River Ranch was also the buyer of LB Miss Cowtown Twist, at $50,000. The six-year-old daughter of Doc O Lena Twist has earned more than $53,000 and sold still in training and eligible for all NCHA novice classes.
Sneakin Out To Play, consigned by trainer Tim Smith, sold for $46,000 to Jon White of Chappell Hill. TX. The six-year-old gelded son of Freckles Playboy is the earner of more than $50,000 and still eligible for $10,000 Novice classes.
Four-year-old Duallys Little Lady brought a winning bid of $44,000 from Jim Osborne of Pilot Point, TX. The Dual Pep daughter, consigned by Kelle Earnheart of Hernando, MS, was a finalist in both the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity and the Memphis Non-Pro Futurity.
Earnheart also consigned Arturo Fuente, purchased for $40,000 by Ronald Caminiti of Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Arturo Fuente, an eight-year-old gelding sired by Doc’s Hickory, has earned nearly $120,000 as a champion and finalist in numerous limited age and weekend events.
As in the past, show horses were hot items at the NCHA Super Stakes Sale, although some owners elected to assign reserve bids which were not attained. “We always find more RNAs among show horses than any other categories,” said Jim Ware of Western Bloodstock. “People spent money raising and training these horses and rather than looking at the market value of the horse, they are looking at what they have invested in it and their expectations are sometimes not realistic.”
Western Bloodstock is currently taking consignments for the NCHA Summer Spectacular Sales, the second largest annual cutting horse auction held in Fort Worth. Last year’s record-breaking sale topped all previous Summer Sales. This year’s Summer Spectacular Sale will be held on July 24 and 25.
