NCHA Horse of the Year, Third Edge Offered September 29th

Third Edge was the kind that drew focus before the first cut. Balanced, quick in the ground, and always reading a cow, he looked like a horse built for the modern game. That presence turned into big-stage results and, more importantly for buyers, a stallion prospect with real ingredients for a breeding program. After major wins, trainer Wesley Galyean summed up the horse’s mindset in post-show remarks: “He’s like a train going down the tracks, just as even and steady as can be. I think he’s going to change the game.

Results That Earned Attention

Third Edge’s defining moment culminated when he was named NCHA Horse of the Year. That title was built on a season anchored by victories in the NCHA Open Derby and the NCHA Super Stakes Open Derby, wins that cemented his place at the top of the sport. Those major crowns were supported by championship runs at Arbuckle Mountain, Brazos Bash, PCCHA Stakes, and West Texas, each reinforcing that his dominance wasn’t confined to one show.

What made Third Edge effective in front of a cow was how he could stay in the ground and stay quiet through it. As Galyean has said in interviews, “He can just creep and slink easier than most any horses,” crediting the way he is put together for that feel.

By the end of his career, Third Edge had $342,528 in earnings and his name etched in the NCHA Hall of Fame. Third Edge isn’t a horse that flashed once, he’s one that delivered every time the stakes were high.

A Pedigree With Depth

Third Edge is by Metallic Rebel and out of Lil Rattler, by Dual Rey.

Metallic Rebel brings modern scope and lateral reach with established sire credentials. On current data, he is a leading NCHA and NRCHA sire with more than $14 million in progeny earnings, which gives Third Edge a sire side that is already producing across disciplines.

On the bottom side, Lil Rattler’s produce record and her place inside the Highbrow Supercat branch give Third Edge one of the most reliable female lines in the book. Lil Rattler herself earned $339,414 and has produced multiple money-earners, with earnings in excess of $1.6 Million. This includes standout performers like Nineteen 42 ($345,632), and Venomous ($322,390). His grand dam, Highbrow Supercat, has produced more than $1.8 million, including Button Down Supercat, the dam of Bugattii ($442,672) and Coureygous ($257,300). That combination is why this mating has worked more than once and why it should continue to work with today’s mares.

Galyean told Quarter Horse News after their Summer Spectacular win: “His mother was a really special mare… [Third Edge] can move better than what she could move. I think that comes from his sire… he’s got the best of both worlds.

Future as a Stallion
Third Edge stands at the start of his second chapter. His first foals are yearlings in 2025, which places buyers in a rare position: early access to a stallion whose show record has already been written into the history books and whose pedigree has proven itself more than once.

His foals are eligible for the NRCHA Cow Horse Incentive, NCHA Super Stakes, Breeders Invitational, PCCHA, and Chrome Cash. That lineup ensures his offspring will have the same runway to major aged events and incentive programs that shaped his own career.

For breeders, the draw is clear. Third Edge offers the credibility of a Horse of the Year, and the repeatability of a cross that has already produced multiple winners. He is young, correct, and positioned to make his mark in the breeding barn.

Third Edge sells September 29, 2025, in the Absolute Dispersal of Teton Ridge Performance Horses.
